Romantic Valentine’s Day Restaurants

With Valentine’s Day approaching, one could get out the fine linen (may need ironing), crystal, silver and china, set the dining room table (hardly ever used), shop and prepare a gourmet meal. Or, one could call grandparents or a babysitter and go out for a romantic, adult dinner. Here are some favorite restaurants to rekindle love and satisfy the appetite.
Westlake Village I was pleased to learn that Paul Lloyd recently opened a new restaurant in Westlake Village. Located near the Hyatt Hotel at 2700 Townsgate Road, Paul’s serves California cuisine with a French twist for lunch and dinner.
Some may remember Paul from Café Bizou in Sherman Oaks. A few years later, he opened his own restaurant. Word spread quickly about his quality food at reasonable prices. In 1999, he opened a second restaurant in Tarzana catering to the West Valley crowd. He sold the restaurants in 2000 and 2002.
Paul’s in Westlake is his largest restaurant. His menu, similar to the other two, still offers his popular potato crusted salmon with mashed potatoes, asparagus in a red wine sauce for lunch ($11.95) and dinner ($14.95). Other popular entrees are roasted duck breast with mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots with a raspberry wine sauce ($16.95) and tender grilled filet mignon with a port wine sauce ($17.95). A one-dollar romaine salad, or soup of the day, is available with each entrée. Paul’s pear salad, coconut shrimp, and lobster ravioli are excellent appetizers (all under $7.95). Save room for his flourless chocolate cake or delicious apple-tart-tatin. The large bar area offers music nightly and an extensive wine list.
On Valentine’s Day, Paul is offering a live jazz band and set menu. For reservations (805) 496-2226. Two party rooms are ideal for wedding showers and birthday celebrations.
West Hollywood
I don’t know any restaurant more hip than Chi. Scarlett Johansson (the latest “it” girl) recently celebrated her birthday at this Sunset Strip, Asian-fusion cuisine hotspot. Located near the lobby of the Hyatt Hotel and backed by Justin Timberlake and nightclub entrepreneurs Art and Allan Davis, Chi has an exotic atmosphere. Designed by Dodd Mitchell as a Chinese opium den with red leather banquettes, black wood tables and an outside patio with romantic seating around a fire-pit. Chef Gavin Baker, formerly of a top Park City restaurant, creates attractive and delicious food. When I dined at Chi, the waiters dressed in black were pleasant and attentive. The element menu offers Earth appetizers (all under $10), Water (seafood) appetizers ranging between $11-$16 and Fire and Water entrees range from $18-$37.
We started with a melt-in-your-mouth Diver scallop lacquered in miso soup and basil oil. Next, we shared the chili-caramel rock shrimp with roasted bananas and a jumbo crabcake with tomato-marmalade and black bean aioli. The soy and coffee cured Angus Filet was cooked to perfection, as was the colorful Vegetarian Bento box with curried vegetables, chilled udon salad, eggplant tempura, miso crusted tofu and brown rice. We had just enough room for a lemongrass-vanilla cappuccino and Nigiri cheesecake.
At another visit we shared the Dim Sum sampler ($24). Served with four different sauces. It was a real treat. Chi is located at 8401 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069. Reservations are encouraged. Call 323-848-3884. Open until 2 am.
Santa Monica
French cuisine is high on any list for romantic dining and JiRaffe serves some of the finest meals on the Westside. Located five blocks from the Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica Blvd. and 5th Street, this two-story, glass-fronted building is home to Raphael Lunetta, executive chef/owner. Much of his inspiration results from visiting his aunt in the South of France every summer as a young lad.
Walk inside and notice the Eiffel Tower and Giraffe motif. Low lighting creates a cozy and elegant feel. The waiters are attractive and charming. Our waiter served us complimentary parsnip and crab bisque. When a basket with a variety of homemade breads arrived we dipped small pieces into this delicious bisque and cleaned the bowl. Next, we each received a demitasse of mushroom soup with a white froth. It looked like a small cappuccino and tasted heavenly.
My roasted beet salad with caramelized walnuts, dried bing cherries, and goat cheese was chopped to look like a pate and exquisite. The fresh vegetables are from the local Santa Monica Farmer’s market.
The purple Peruvian Gnocchi with fresh Florida rock shrimp, roasted purple pearl onions, and mandarin cross tomato concasse was colorful and tasty.
The menu states the poultry products are antibiotic and hormone- free. We chose to splurge ordering New Zealand rack of lamb with yellow potato samosas and curried vegetable mousaka ($28) and the caramelized huge pork chop served with wild rice, smoked bacon and apple chutney ($23).
For dessert, a refreshing and flavorful three scoops of fresh fruit sorbet of passion fruit, pomegranate and blackberry with almond tuille cookies hit the spot.
It’s wise to make reservations (310) 917-6671 requesting an upstairs table. JiRaffe is open for dinner nightly.
A nice way to end the evening is to stroll down to the Third street promenade holding hands. Happy Valentine’s Day.
