I think the reason you can't install after you format your hard drive because the OS is an upgrade not a full version. If it is a full version, you should be able to boot from cd.

make sure
- your copied disk is a bootable disk.
- your pc's bios has and set to boot from cd
Rather than extract the image , you can simply make cd using cd-cd copied method with bootable CD. Hope this help
good luck

tasay: it only mean 1 thing , your source cd is not bootable cd. Because if your source cd is bootable than more than likely your copied will be the same.
- in term of make the cd bootable especially XP, I 've tried it and unable to do it. But here is the link see if it helps. http://www.etplanet.com/etplanet/bootable_cd.shtm
- My only advise and relatively simple and easiest way is to find a bootable cd and do a cd-cd process.
- Lastly , you alway can make bootable floppy disks for XP , it tooks 6 ...yes 6 floppy disks.

well, if you don't have the bootable CD (or your CD-rom is not bootable) then load DOS, go to directory \i386 and run the winnt.exe
You may want to load smartdrv beforehand otherwise it gonna be slow. You may need the startup disk of Win98 to access your CD-rom under DOS
