I converted my LAN to a wireless 802.11b system and wondering if I should switch my FTP server as well. Has anyone tried this and what are the pros and cons ?

DO NOT Switch it, your wireless Lan is only 11MBit max, using cable LAN is 100MBit max, so the speed will slow down alot in your network. Use both to give you more access from anywhere in your house and also have good speed access in your Lan from other computers
Also Wireless Lan is easy to get lost signal, not stable as using cable LAN
thanks

Thanks for the reply. I'd like to put the FTP server in my garage to save space and cut down on messy wirings that's why I'm thinking about switching it to wireless as well. The FTP is for file transfers with friends over the net with max speed of 1.5 Mbps (cable) so I will never saturate the 11 Mbps bandwidth of the 802.11b. Within the LAN there's no large file transfers so wireless suits me just fine. So far, wi-fi is quite nice, Orinoco gold with 128bit encryption, MAC filtering and I haven't experienced any signal loss (knock on wood). I have 3 PCs, 1 laptop on wireless and a FTP server hard wired to the router.

You can just put all 4 system on wireless with no problem. You must be using your school T-1 or T-3 or a company T-Line. Also it will never be 1.5 always and at a window frame no one will use all of the width which will max. limit of wireless nor cat 5. So you are safe no matter what step you chosse.
