redhat is OS like windows but much more stable.. the install comes in 3 cds without source code.. if you want to dl it, go to Linuxiso.org, they have downloadable iso for u to burn ..
yeudoi, I'm actually a windows person but learning to use linux too :)

linux puts a superblock format on the HDD, therefore, you cannot access linux directory from windows.....but the other way around...maybe...i dont know.....it's been a while since i've used linux.
[maybe im completely wrong]

1)Is redhat easy to use. Well not really as windows is where all you do is click and click..but nowaday Linux isn't as bad as they use to be anymore. eventhough installing it is still alittle tricky for some computer because of its hardware supports.
2)About softwares, well Linux has a good thing about this issue which is most of its softwares are free. And well you can use some of windows softwares, but not all, by using a program installed in most Linux call Wine..
3)What softwares is it compatible with? Well i never need the use of using windows based softwares while using Linux. since it has most of the thing i needed. like programming language, spread sheet,Word processors, internet with Netscape(and others),and etc..oh yeah even chat and games.. phewss almost forgot my most important thing. :D
ps: some Linux can be install under fat partition as well therefore yes you can go back and forth between Linux and Xp.. eventhough it's kinda useless and make linux less stable. and well if i not mistaken since it been awhile since i install both of them in the same machine. you can go into windows from linux by checking out the dev...
to read windows from linux try to mount the partition that's all.
mount -t FAT16 (whatever fat) /dev/windowsdev /dir
or if when u installed linux and specify the windows partition in linux, u will read it just like a linux partition automatically.
that's all..
in general, Linux is not for newbie..
if you thinking of using desktop apps in linux.. then u better don't.. unless the cost matter to you.. otherwise.. choose windows for the desktop apps...
if u thinking of server side, forget windows.. cuz windows is for newbies :)

You can access FAT (Windows partition) from inside Linux. The procedure is:
- Create a mount point for that FAT
# mkdir /mnt/windows
- Edit /etc/fstab
# vi /etc/fstab
- Add a line to /etc/fstab something like this:
/dev/hda1 vfat /mnt/windows
Try # man /etc/fstab for more info
Hmm... the other way around is hard, i really don't know how you can mount a Linux partition, while you're in Windows, i just don't think that is possible... unless you're running Vmware, but that is a different scope...
Good luck
