I have never used Linux before, and I am planning to install it to my computer. However, I have some questions that I need someone here to give me some head-ups.

What are the differences and similarities between Red Hat 8 and Mandrake 9. Is that similar to Windows 98 (DOS kernel) and WinXP (NT kernel)?

Why there are 5CDs for Red Hat 8 and 3CDs for Mandrake 9?
Why do they need so many CDs while MS Windows needs only 1?

Please give me as much detail as possible. I appreciate all of your inputs.

Hi rdlai,

I'd suggest you to read all threads on this UNIX forum. It should give you some idea about Linux.

1. RH and Mandrake are 2 biggest distro. of Linux. They both use the same kernel 2.4.2 and package apps depending on their technique. Win98 and WinXP use different kernel.
2. RH packs more apps, doc, source, etc... on its distro.
3. MS packs only OS, no doc, source code, apps, etc...
Hope that helps.

Why there are 5 CDs on Redhat?
+ Because there are thousands of open source (freeware) applications available without additional charges.

Why there are only 1 CD on Windows XP?
+ Because windows is a proprietary commercial product. It doesn't come with any application. If you want an application, for instance Microsoft Office 2000, you'll have to pay for that software, or if you want to buy Norton Firewall, you'll have to buy that software, they don't come with Windows itself.
