The 2004 Solara will be available in the SLE, SE and SE Sport grades, each with its own interior surface treatments. The SLE model will receive a rich wood-grain trim, while a brushed aluminum and silver finish trim will be applied to the SE grade. SE models equipped with an all-new Sports Package will feature a unique interior complete with black graphite-accented trim. Solara will be equipped with either a V6 or four-cylinder engine. The Solara's all-new 3.3-liter V6 will generate 225 horsepower at 5,600 RPM, an increase of 27 horsepower, and 240 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,600 RPM, 28 more lb.-ft. of torque than the current model. With both engines, Solara will be EPA-certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV). Solaras equipped with the V6 will be mated to an all-new five-speed automatic sequential transmission.

Lexus Introduces the HPX Concept Car in New York
Lexus introduced its latest concept vehicle today at the New York International Auto Show. Known as the HPX, or High Performance Crossover, the vehicle combines the versatility of a luxury utility vehicle and the performance of a sports sedan in a sleek and stylish package.

The HPX concept was initiated and designed by Calty Design Research, Inc., Toyota's California-based design center in Newport Beach.

"We wanted to develop a next-generation SUV concept that would help lead us into the future of luxury sport utility vehicles," said Calty Vice President Kevin Hunter. "Our objective was to look beyond the current SUV formulas and define a vehicle that expresses strong emotional styling with high levels of performance, utility, comfort and luxury. We see the HPX as an intelligent evolution of the SUV."

The Lexus GS 430 luxury sport sedan platform provided "technical inspiration" for the HPX. The concept proposes the security of all-wheel drive with a dynamic form that yields utility and dramatic styling. The HPX is powered by a 4.3-liter 300-horsepower V8 engine and paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It has an athletic chassis with height-adjustable suspension to match high-performance expectations. Premium levels of comfort and luxury complete the picture.

"The luxury sport utility market is growing and changing rapidly," said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Denny Clements. "The HPX concept is something we think would appeal to forward-thinking, affluent buyers with active lifestyles."

The HPX concept also serves as the first expression of a new Lexus design philosophy. This design philosophy is not a strict formula that will be used to calculate new forms and styles for Lexus. Rather, it is an idea that will be adapted in many forms to introduce more continuity to the Lexus line-up. The HPX incorporates key characteristics representative of the new approach that includes innovation, confidence, dynamic posture, intriguing elegance and the infusion of technology.

The overall shape of the HPX seeks to communicate the strength of all-wheel drive capability and the power of the highly capable GS 430 underpinnings. The distinctive shoulder form and low-set Lexus brand grille confirm the high performance intentions. LED light modules imbedded in the jeweled head and taillights suggest a rich, high-technology look.

"We strived to convey a dynamic profile that expresses speed and agility," said Hunter. "At the same time, we also wanted the HPX to give clues to its technical sophistication."

Intended to evoke the sophistication, functionality and luxurious comfort of an executive jet, the interior is remarkably clean and uncluttered with a driver-oriented feel. The instrument panel uses advanced technology to allow drivers to customize displays and information to their needs. Readouts can be scaled, repositioned, and color-adjusted for individual preference. Small cameras situated on the side and rear of the vehicle feed their images to the front display.

A drive-by-wire steering system is employed and a single interface is used to navigate various control menus as well as the GPS navigation system.

Full volume bucket seats are provided for the front and middle rows, while a third row seat designed for children folds into the rear floor. LCD display screens deploy from the center console to provide DVD entertainment for the second and third row passengers.

"Recognizing the increasing complexity of vehicle interiors, we really tried to simplify the environment for drivers, while allowing customizing features to fit their special needs and preferences," said Hunter. "The simple, clean environment helps drivers relax and minimize distractions while driving."

"The HPX represents an innovative approach to a high-performance vehicle that combines luxury, sport and utility to help drivers make the most of every moment," said Clements.

Volkswagen has publically released the first four official photos of its Touareg sport utility vehicle due to be introduced this fall at the Paris Auto Show.

Volkswagen and Porsche jointly developed their SUV projects together to help defray development costs and pool resources. The Touareg utilizes the same basic platform and AWD system as the Porsche Cayenne, but has its own distinctive (and far better looking) sheetmetal. Although deceiving at first look, the Touareg is larger than photos would suggest: 76 inches wide and 67.7 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 112.6 inches. The overall length of the Touareg is 187 inches. Compared to the BMW X5 4.6is the Touareg sits 4 inches longer, 2 inches wider, with a wheelbase 1.5 inches longer and a mere half inch difference in height.

The all-wheel-drive system is also all-new as both companies wanted a vehicle that is as capable off-road as it is on the road. The fully electronic AWD system utilizes electronically controlled differentials that can be programmed to respond to both pre-mapped preferences (say a 30/70 front to rear wheel drive bias) and to varying conditions of both slip and driver demands. For instance if full throttle is applied from a stop, the system will use actual throttle measurement to apply more torque to the rear wheels in anticipation of front slip (as opposed to a system that must detect slip first before diverting power or locking differentials). The system will still detect slip though and divert more power to the wheels that need it most. The system employs an inter-axle differential lock and also has a true low-range gear set for those demanding conditions that warrant it. Towing capacity is 7,716 lbs and Volkswagen claims more than 11 inches of ground clearance and the ability to ford through water up to 23 inches deep.

here is what i though, correct me if am wrong. The more the powerful the car the noisy it get due to the engine, plus the Solara is SULEV, what is on HONDA ULEV? 2004 Nissan Pathfinder Armada

Nissan is tackling the domestic automakers with a direct assault in both full-size pickup and sport/utility vehicles. No protracted rollout or half measures here. The Armada set sail in New York, with the market attack to begin fall 2003. Supplementing the Pathfinder, the dramatically larger Pathfinder Armada features three seating rows, available in seven- or eight-passenger configurations. The Titan-shared interior feels more like a premium sedan than a truck, with its artful design and relatively lush materials. Every Armada includes four-wheel, ABS-equipped disc brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system with Traction Control and Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS). A sophisticated, capable SUV, the Pathfinder Armada 4x4 uses all-drive technology derived from the Skyline GT-R for on-road and off-road traction, aided by a two-speed electronic transfer case.

Fairlady going covertible

A superb driver's car, the Nissan 350Z has wooed the enthusiast public, garnering enough buyers to claim the title from the Chevrolet Corvette as the best-selling sports car. And that's before the coupe drops its top in summer 2003. Eager for open roads and sunshine, the Z Roadster has the same responsiveness and athleticism that has made the coupe so successful, yet adding more sensory input. The cloth top is released from or secured to the windshield header with a three-lock, single latch located directly above the middle windshield area. The one-touch power top raises or lowers in a modest 20 seconds. The Z Roadster will be offered in two trims, Enthusiast Model and Touring Model. The base Enthusiast version features power seats, rear wind deflector, 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, and automatic climate control. The Touring Model adds a Bose audio system with 6-disc CD changer and seven speakers, and leather-appointed seats with heater and heated mirrors.

Well, there are tons of other factors beside the horse power when you evaluate engine performance...e.g. torque...

Well, it's not necessary true that the more powerful engine, the noisier it is. It depends on many other factors as well e.g. insulation.

Well, one thing I have to admit that Hondas are always noisier than Toyotas...but Honda engine may be little more responsive and more fun to drive.

Wow, the Prius looks great...does it get better MPG? I am always a big fan of Prius...I think the Toyota's Hybrid technology is amazing.

Nissan wasted little time following the Titan King Cab reveal with a look at the Crew Cab model scheduled to go on sale late 2003. Available in five- and six-passenger configurations, the 127-cubic-foot interior boasts more space than its competitors, including 2004 models. The rear seat is split 60/40 and has a 24-degree rake for comfort. Passengers can experience mobile theater with an optional 7-inch DVD system complimented by a 350-watt, 10-speaker Rockford-Fosgate sound system. The 5-foot 7-inch cargo bed has its own distinct features, such as an industry-first factory spray-in bedliner, movable tie-down cleats, bedside storage compartment, tailgate work light, and a bed-mounted 12-volt power point. Like the King Cab, this four-door packs a 5.6-liter DOHC V-8 with over 300 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.

2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback
Mitsubishi will transplant the practical Lancer wagon variant to the U.S. market for 2004, fleshing out the wide Lancer line. Benefiting from the platform enhancements for the new model year, the wagon will be offered in LS and Ralliart trim, each distinguished in dynamics and personality. Both Sportbacks are motivated by a 2.4-liter/160-horsepower SOHC MIVEC engine -- Mitsu's counter to the VTEC. The LS features air conditioning, 140-watt AM/FM/CD audio system, white-faced gauges, a height-adjustable driver's seat, tilt steering wheel, power windows/locks/mirrors, and remote keyless entry. The Sportback Ralliart packs a sport-tuned suspension, faster-ratio steering rack, more aggressive V-rated tires, anti-lock brakes, and tougher-sounding exhaust. The models are differentiated visually by the Ralliart's exterior treatment, with front spoiler, grille, tinted headlamp lenses, fog lights, side trim, and rear air dam. The only variant left to complete the family would be a Sportback Evolution...

Ford Escape going hybrid

Marching closer to dealer lots like an Energizer bunny, the Escape Hybrid was unveiled in show trim, alongside the old school special edition Mustangs. Looking sharp with 18-inch wheels, fresh front fascia, integrated skid plate, and dramatic roof rack, the real story lay beneath the Ice Blue exterior. The sport/cute features an application-specific 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and 65-kW electric motor that combined deliver performance to rival the traditional 3.0-liter V-6 yet return 35-40 mpg city fuel economy with nearly a 50 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. And despite a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack on board, Ford ensures that both cargo capacity and off-road ability equal the gasoline-powered Escape. The Escape Hybrid is scheduled to begin fleet production late fall and enter mass production late calendar year 2004.

Mitsubishi has completely revised the midsize Galant sedan to give it more power, more room, and more attitude. Twenty more horsepower are available from the 2.4-liter/160-hp SULEV engine found in the DE and ES models, or buyers may step up to 3.8-liter/230-hp V-6 in the LS and GTS models for even more performance. Dimensions have been stretched inside and out to make the new Galant one of the largest in its class, boasting more than 101 cubic feet of passenger room. And more attitude can be found in its dramatically redesigned appearance that features angular lines contrasted by a sweeping roof outside, and soft-touch materials with ice-blue illumination inside. The all-new Galant is available in a choice of models ranging from the base $19,000 DE, the high-volume $20,000 ES, the sporty V-6-powered $22,000 LS, or the top-level V-6 GTS (pricing not yet available).

2004 Subaru Baja Turbo
From the company that sells a track-bred, 300-horsepower compact car, an air-gulping hood scoop added to a model can mean only one thing: turbo! Subaru force-feeds more excitement in the beach-bound Baja with a intercooled, turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer engine, producing 210 horsepower and reaching a 235 lb-ft torque peak. This engine should not only help drivers with their hyper-active lifestyle around town, but make the Baja more eager in the mountains. Other standard features to appeal to weekend warriors include all-wheel drive, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, four-beam halogen headlamps, foldable side mirrors, fog lamps with stone guards, full independent suspension, and 8.4 inches of clearance. Like all Bajas, this new model includes the clever Switchback door that allows large objects to extend into the folded rear seat area.

Nam you ask for the information on Prius? Here is what i found

2004 Toyota Prius
With a decidedly Japanese stage performance, Toyota unveiled the second-generation Toyota Prius. The original pioneering sedan was more successful at putting hybrid-powered cars in driveways than expected, making Toyota optimistic at the acceptance for the much improved replacement. Everything is bigger and better, with numbers galore to back up the claims. The car has grown, bumping the Prius from a compact to a full-fledged midsize sedan at 110 cubic feet interior volume. Horsepower climbs to 106, with 0-60 mph times dropping to the mid 10 second range, while fuel economy soars. Toyota boasts that the Prius will double the combined (city and highway) fuel economy ratings for any midsize car, and best that of any compact car. Emissions are 30 percent less than the SULEV (super ultra low) 2003 Prius, making it the cleanest car on the planet. Need more numbers? How about, coefficient of drag is 0.26 versus 0.29, it stretches 5.4 inches longer than the current model, cargo capacity is 16 cubic feet, and the new Prius carries 370 patents. The bottom line number wasn't announced, but we're told the price will be just above the 2003 model. It adds up to hybrids becoming the mainstream, with the latest Hybrid Synergy Drive system leading the way.

Wow, finally a Gasoline-Electric Hybrid SUV is out! but sadly, it's Ford...I can't put a good word about Ford for its quality, workmanship, and reliability.

Just imaging, the Ford Escort Sedan...a very simple small car has been recalled like 10 times over 4 years. Now with the hybrid...a much much more complex vehicle....I don't know how many recalls it is going to get...good luck to Ford!

I will definitely give a thought on Japanese's Hybrid SUV...does anyone has any idea when there will be one? I've seen the Hybrid Hydrogen-Electric Highlander from Toyota...but it's not that practical. That Highlander is located at California Fuel Cell Partnership in West Sacramento, California.

A special thank goes to R34...you are the king of cars!

For various reasons, I really like the Prius...I think the electric car project got me into it; In the year of 2000 when I was in the market for a replacement vehicle for my '82 Prelude, the Prius really caught my eyes. The material and workmanship of that vehicle far excess the competition in that price range. To me, the vehicle is worth at lest $35k USD. I did not pick that car due to my out-door lifestyle which requires an SUV...so I suppressed my feeling for the Prius...until I can afford a second car.

Seriously, the current model of Prius does not look that good. To me, I don't really care...as long as the vehicle can bring me from point A to point B practically

Now R34 introduces the Prius again...sure enough it's way better in every dimensions...I am so tempting now....I will definitely go to the dealer to check it out when it becomes available.

At local dealers, I see the Prius on-sale for as low as $18K new. I heard that Toyota loses about 8K for every Prius they sell...is that true?

Thanks again R43,

Estima was the name given to the Japanese-market rear-wheel-drive Previa minivan. With its powertrain placed underfloor ahead of the rear axle, the ambitious vehicle configuration precluded the use of a V6 engine, thus limiting its consumer appeal. Toyota revealed at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show what was to become the replacement for the Estima in the guise of a concept showcasing the sophisticated THS-C Toyota Hybrid System. A conventional gasoline-engine-propelled Estima (still Previa in Europe) preceded the Hybrid and conformed to the universal transverse powertrain, front-wheel-drive formula. The Estima Hybrid shares the same body shell and chassis, with several unique outer panels and parts to distinguish it.

The Estima is a fairly large vehicle by Japanese standards, but smaller than the American norm for minivans, at 4.77 m (188 in) long on a 2.9-m (114-in) wheelbase, with a 1.79-m (70-in) width and 1.78-m (70-in) height. It accommodates up to eight people in three-row seating. There is also a VIP version with two oversize rear seats and every conceivable amenity. The Estima Hybrid has the world's first electric on-demand four-wheel-drive system, christened "E-Four."

The THS-C B-Four configuration of the Estima Hybrid is shown along with its front- and rear-wheel drivetrains and nickel/metal-hydride battery.

While the Prius THS combines parallel and series hybrid systems employing a propulsion motor and generator, the Estima THS-C is a parallel system. In the Prius, the motor singularly drives the front wheels directly when moving off. The engine drives the front wheels via a planetary gear unit that acts as an electrically regulated (by the generator) CVT. The THS-C front powertrain comprises the IC; a double-pinion, planetary-gear, power-switching device and twin clutches; and a 216-V, 13-kW motor/generator producing 110 N•m (81 lb•ft). The rear-wheel drivetrain has its own motor/generator rated at 18 kW, 108 N•m (80 lb•ft), on 216 V.

The engine is an Atkinson-cycle (late intake-valve closing) version of the type 2AZ 2.4-L inline four-cylinder unit, given the suffix FXE, and producing 96 kW (129 hp) at 5600 rpm and 190 N•m (140 lb•ft) at 4000 rpm. For short bursts of acceleration, the engine can assist the twin motors, driving all wheels and producing brisk performance. The THS-C chooses, alternates, and combines the three power sources, employing either or both of the twin motor/generators to replenish the compact nickel/metal-hydride battery pack placed under the third-row seat. The rear propulsion motor is deployed when the system determines the driver's desire for quick takeoff or it enhances vehicle stability in adverse surface conditions. The inverter with converter function transforms the storage battery's dc to 100-V ac (Japanese home voltage), allowing the use of home appliances and entertainment equipment. The Estima Hybrid's brake system is as advanced as the powertrain; an electronically controlled, hydraulically assisted system controls the four brakes independently for optimum retardation and stability.

The Estima Hybrid attains an equivalent fuel consumption of 42.6 mpg on the Japanese urban 10/15-mode cycle. The 70-L (18.5-gal) fuel tank allows the minivan to travel 1000 km (620 mi) if a steady 100 km/h (62 mph) is maintained. The vehicle is Japanese ULEV-rated

Oh man, this is the exact configuration that I dreamed before. There was one time that I wanted to make a 4-WD RAVE4 become similar to the configuration of this Van...but that project never comes true.

(620-mile range on 18.5 Gal Gas tank!) this is amazing. I am pretty sure that it's not a power house but the number looks very promissing. My dad's Sienna with the same gas tank capacity can only go for 360 miles.

The previous Previa sold quite well in the United States...with 2.4l I.L. 4 cyld. engine with super charge, the van is very reliable but a little fuel thirsty.

The interior of this Estima is way nicer that the Previa and Sienna...I am wondering why Toyota does not market this Van in the US?

Thanks R34 for sharing such wonderful pieces of info....keep it up bro.

This is the high performance version of the CTS - the best handling Cadillac ever but always seen as not powerful enough. It is developed by GM Performance Division, a newly set up division to develop high performance cars like BMW M-division or Mercedes’ AMG. Like the regular CTS, the V version is thoroughly tested and tuned in Nurburgring its handling worth admiration from European car lovers.
Heart of the CTS-V is a 400 horsepower 5.7-litre LS6 V8 coming from Chevrolet Corvette Z06. It is 50hp more than a regular Corvette and just 5hp shy of the Z06. The peak power is generated at 6000rpm, while peak torque of 390 lbft is reached at 4800rpm. It drives the same Tremec T56 6-speed manual gearbox like the Corvette. Transmit to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential to guarantee the huge power and torque not abusing the chassis.

Unsurprisingly, springs are stiffened by 27%, anti-roll bars are thickened and new shock absorbers are used. 4-pot Brembo calipers clamp huge size discs (355mm and 365mm diameter discs front and rear respectively). Wheels grow to 18-inch, wearing 245/45WR tires. Externally, CTS-V gets deeper air dam and skirts to reduce lift and larger intakes to cool the engine and brakes.

Although these modifications and the big V8 lifts kerb weight to 1745kg, the powerful CTS-V still able to crack the 60mph mark in less than 5 seconds, according to GM. Top speed is limited at 155mph. Still want Holden HSV?

Mar 9, 2002 - Porsche has revealed the first glimpse of its luxury sport utility vehicle, the Porsche Cayenne. Taking the Porsche experience into a new dimension, the Cayenne aims to create the perfect balance of performance and power, delivering outstanding on-pavement performance and very good off-road driving characteristics. The vehicle's debut is slated for the last half of 2002.

Photos released are of the Cayenne Turbo, which will be powered by a Porsche-designed 4.5-liter, twin turbocharged V-8 engine rated at 450 horsepower and producing 457 lb-ft of torque. Porsche also announced a second model, the normally aspirated, 4.5-liter, V-8-powered Cayenne S, which is rated at 340 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Cayenne Turbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 seconds, vs. 7.2 seconds for the Cayenne S. The Cayenne's towing capacity is 3,500 kilograms, or 7,716 lbs.

A six-speed Tiptronic S transmission is standard equipment on the Cayenne Turbo, and both Cayenne versions have permanent all-wheel drive, an inter-axle differential lock and additional low-range gears, and the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system.

Additional front air inlets, 'power domes' on the hood, and four exhaust tailpipes help distinguish the Cayenne Turbo from the Cayenne S. The Cayenne is 75.9 inches wide and 66.9 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 112.4 inches. The overall length of the Turbo version is 188.43 inches.

"Porsche has been at the forefront of all-wheel-drive design," said Frederick J. Schwab, PCNA president and CEO. "From the Lohner-Porsche in 1900 to the Porsche 959 in 1985, Porsche has been engineering four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. The Cayenne is a natural for us, and it will put the sport in sport utility vehicles."

After three years of comprehensive testing in remote locations across the globe, the Cayenne concept was approved. The requirements: satisfy Porsche's performance and quality standards and meet the utility and reliability expectations of an SUV.

Cayenne production will take place in Leipzig, Germany, in a newly constructed factory, but its engine will be built in Zuffenhausen. Porsche will produce approximately 25,000 Cayennes during the first full year of production, 70 percent of which will be for export.

Audi A3

The new premium sports model in the compact class has now reached the starting line: Audi is launching its second-generation A3. With powerful four- and six-cylinder engines developing up to 177 kW (241 bhp), quattro drive, the new automatic-shift DSG sports gearbox and highly dynamic running gear, it offers all the driving pleasure suggested by the sporty lines of its body. The equipment and trim once again reach the exclusive standard in the compact class that is also typical of the larger models in the Audi range.

The new Audi A3 has every prospect of repeating the unique success of the previous A3 model. The second generation, with its distinct sporting character, highly advanced technologies and the most dynamic design of any car in its class, qualifies again for the pole position that went immediately to the first-generation A3 when it appeared in 1996.

One of the achievements of the previous A3 when it appeared was to define a new automobile segment. - the premium compact class - and then to dominate it until production ceased. The Audi A3 was always a leading competitor on the national and international scene: this was confirmed not only by the large number of awards it received but also by its sales figures.

Design

Emotion and precision: these two characteristics determine the exterior design of the new A3 and also give it the 'family resemblance' that identifies it as a member of the current Audi model family. The entire body is now tauter and more athletic in appearance.

With a wheelbase lengthened by 65 millimetres and 30 millimetres of additional body width, but lower by 10 millimetres in overall height, the proportions of the new Audi A3 approach those of a classic coupe. This impression is enhanced by the shorter body overhangs, the distinctly greater slope of the C-posts and the shallower windows. At the same time the occupants benefit from distinctly larger interior dimensions at both front and rear and, as a result, from a higher standard of comfort in every respect.

Striking features of the new A3's front-end styling are the marked inward taper of the sides and the dynamic shaping of the clear-glass headlights, the upper edges of which draw the eye toward the centre of the car and give the A3's front end, with its characteristic Audi double grille, a confident, forceful character.

The rear end of the body is notable for a significant reduction in joint lines and a clear, graphic division of the surface areas. This is an evolution in the formal idiom that nonetheless confirms its relationship with the previous award-winning model. A bold visual element at the rear are the exposed exhaust tailpipes - either single or double according to the chosen engine.

The interior design also expresses sporting character and elegance, a feeling enhanced by a lower seated position than in the previous model and by many other visible details such as the circular aluminium-look ventilation outlets, the high centre console with ergonomically ideal gear lever position and the sports-car-style floor-mounted accelerator pedal. The instrument cluster is compact in its dimensions, with the clear layout of a chronometer.

The definite growth in space available for all the occupants is a major step forward in the new-generation model. Those seated at the rear profit in particular from much-improved knee room and width at shoulder level. Space-saving design of the handbrake makes it possible to install two additional cup-holders in the centre console where they can also be reached by rear-seat occupants.

Driveline

The extensive choice of engines for the A3 includes three new options. The Audi engineers have increased the size of the highly popular TDI engine to two litres; in addition, this engine now has four valves per cylinder. The 2.0 FSI and 3.2 V6 were recently seen for the first time in the A4 and the TT. All these engines transmit their power either to the front wheels or, as an option, by way of the quattro driveline permanently to all four wheels. Here are details of the complete range of engines:

- 3.2-litre V6, 177 kW (241 bhp), 320 Nm torque (from mid-2003)
- 2.0-litre FSI, 110 kW (150 bhp), 200 Nm torque
- 1.6-litre, 75 kW (102 bhp), 148 Nm torque
- 2.0-litre TDI, 103 kW (140 bhp), 320 Nm torque.
- 1-9-litre TDI, 77 kW (105 bhp), 250 Nm torque

Depending on the chosen engine, a 5- or 6-speed manual-shift gearbox is fitted; tiptronic is a further option. With six forward speeds, this automatic transmission is an unmatched offer in the compact car category.

As an alternative to the manual gearbox, the most powerful petrol and TDI versions can be ordered with the new direct shift sports gearbox DSG. This innovative transmission, inspired by motor racing technology, has twin automated clutches that permit exceptionally rapid gear changes with no break in the flow of power from the engine - and thus pure sports-car style driving pleasure.

The driver changes gear either sequentially with the gear lever or at the steering wheel paddles. An additional bonus is that the DSG offers the convenience of automatic, electronically controlled gear shifts if preferred. However, since it operates without the power losses associated with a torque converter, cars equipped with DSG have the dynamism and lower fuel consumption associated with a conventional manual gearbox. The DSG versions will be available from mid-2003 onwards.

Still with no equivalent in the premium compact class; quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Even the power developed by the highest-performance versions of the new A3 can be converted ideally into forward motion with this system, which serves as a basis for dynamic driving and active safety at the same time.

Running gear

The second key to the new Audi A3's excellent dynamics on the road is its highly effective suspension, with a refined version of the McPherson strut layout at the front and the new four-link independent suspension at the rear.

This running gear is designed for sporty, agile handling allied to high stability, and makes cornering a pleasure whether the car has front-wheel drive or the quattro system. The anti-roll bars are directly attached to the suspension strut in order to minimise body movement around the longitudinal axis. An additional bonus is a standard of ride comfort that would do credit to a car in a much higher category.

16- or 17-inch alloy wheels (the 17-inch wheels are standard in Ambition models) improve performance on the road and also contribute a sporty visual accent. The brake system, with discs of increased diameter, has been matched to the increased power of the engines.

Electro-mechanical steering with the amount of power assistance dependent on road speed is a new feature on the Audi A3. It combines optimum feedback from steering movements with a low level of sensitivity to vibration caused by the road surface, and also consumes much less energy than a conventional power steering system.

Equipment and trim

Like its precursor, the new Audi A3 sets the standard with an equipment and trim specification in accordance with its premium status. Three equipment lines - Attraction with its abundant character, Ambition for those who prefer a particularly sporty effect and Ambiente for a highly exclusive style - enable every A3 to be supplied in accordance with the owner's personal preferences.

Standard items on Attraction models include 'Easy Entry' front seats, electric front windows and central locking with radio-operated remote control. The driver's seat has height adjustment as a standard feature and - new to this class - heated rear seats can also be ordered. Another option for greater occupant comfort is a sun screen for the rear window.

The new A3 naturally incorporates such safety features as the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP), new front seats with crash-active head restraints and the sideguard head-level airbag system.

In addition to the items of equipment available in the various lines, a wide range of other options awaits the A3 owner. Some are designed for added comfort and convenience such as the high-quality audio systems; these can be combined with a BOSE sound system. Electronic climate control is available with separate controls for the driver and front passenger. This and the navigation system, with TV tuner option, raise the A3 to an equipment level such as would normally be expected only in cars in a higher category. Another new feature: the optional CD changer is now in the glove box, for particularly easy access.

The through-loading system with removable ski bag, which can even accommodate two snowboards, and the sensor that switches on the low-beam headlights automatically are further evidence that the second-generation Audi A3 can again claim to be setting new trends in the premium compact car segment.

Maxima

Nissan officially launches the all-new Maxima in Detroit motor show. The new platform shares with Altima thus it is also produced in the Tennessee plant in the USA alongside the Altima and Murano. The 40% stiffer chassis rides on struts and multi-link suspensions. Engine is the familiar 3.5-litre V6 pumping out 260hp and 250lbft-plus in this tune. Different versions have different transmissions (4-speed auto, 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual), wheels and tyres (225/55R17, 245/45R18). The hottest manual-gearbox version also has a helical mechanical LSD to improve handling of the front-wheel-drive Maxima.

The attractive exterior design has strong European taste, but it was actually done in Japan, where the car will be called "Teana". It has a good aerodynamic drag coefficient of either 0.28 (with spoiler) or 0.30 (without spoiler). Sales of Maxima will start in March.

The cabin of Maxima is no bigger than Altima. However, it certainly looks more expensive and have a sporty design theme. In particular, the instrument reading and centre console mirrors those of the 350Z. In addition to the 260hp engine, the 6-speed manual gearbox, the LSD and big wheels and tyres, this Maxima should be an awesome performance sedan, at least in the front-wheel-drive world.

Once again, Ford used the New York Auto Show to unveil a vehicle that apparently exists only on paper. This time, it was the 2006 Futura that appeared in pen-and-ink form. Last year, that honor went to the Five Hundred.

Underneath the skin, the Futura – a name originally used for a Lincoln concept car, then transferred to the “hot” Falcon of the early 1960s and Fairmont coupe of the 1980s – is a stretched and widened Mazda6, and will be almost exactly the same size as the U.S. version of the Honda Accord. Which means it will be offered with inline four-cylinder and V6 engines; the option of manual, automatic, and CVT transmissions; and a hybrid powertrain.

Though it’s hard to comment on the design of a vehicle based solely on a sketch, the Futura borrows the front end design of the 427 Concept that debuted at the 2003 North American International Auto Show . The thick 'bent bar' grille and below-bumper insert mimic the 427’s, though with a bit more sweep and curvature than shown on the earlier concept sedan. The edges are chamfered such that they flow back toward the stacked headlights, and up to the center section of the hood. This is reminiscent of the 'power bulge' seen on many 1960s American sedans, and disguises the section height of this area. As a result, the overhang can be kept relatively short without giving the nose a heavy feel.

A strong character line rises from the front bumper to the taillights, and sets the transition between the shoulder line and the indention above the rocker panel. This creates a feeling of strength and stability around the rocker section, and allows for a relatively tall side section without adding visual weight. How the Futura translates from sketch to metal will be of great interest.

TL

"In California, and especially on the freeways, the part of a car you see the most is the rear end. So we wanted to make sure that this concept looks just as fast and aggressive from the rear as it does from the front." That's Jon Ikeda, chief designer for the Acura Concept TL. So, to provide this sense of aggressiveness the short deck lid has a kick up that, combined with the V-shaped break does provide a sense of dynamism that is lacking in the current generation TL (and which also looks far more European than other Acuras).

From the side, the vehicle is wedge-shaped, which is particularly pronounced through the length of the hood in relation to the short trunk. The design theme was "ultimate athlete." There is a remarkably deep character line that joins the front and rear side marker lights. There are deep draws in the hood that are matched with those in the front fascia; they flare back toward the flush-mounted windscreen. The body is clean, all the way to the replacement of the side view mirrors with small cameras (something that Acura and other marques have been showing for the past few years) and the replacement of the windshield wiper blades with a high-pressure air jet system that is meant to blow the rain and snow away.

The production version of the TL is scheduled for the market this fall. If it maintains even a modicum of the tension seen here, it will be more of a contender than it has been thus far in the luxury sedan marketplace.
