NOUN: A tropical and semitropical tree (Delonix regia)
native to Madagascar, having bipinnately compound
leaves, clusters of large scarlet flowers, and long
pods. Also called flamboyant, poinciana.

-------

In literature, Flamboyant (Hoa Phuong Do) is used to
refer to Hai Phong. It is considered to be the symbol
of Hai Phong. This ornamental plant with shadow was
commonly planted right after the city’s foundation.
Flamboyant has many other names as phuong, kim phuong,
phuong vi, phuong tay, xoan tay, ba giang (in the
South it is called "diep") and its scientific name is
Delonic Regia Raf. This kind of flower is easily
planted and it blooms from May to July. It was
imported into Viet Nam at the end of the 19th century.
At present, Flamboyant trees are still the main plants
in Hai Phong’s set of plants for shadow but they are
now not as beautiful as they were before 1970s so new
ones are being added.

The red colour of this flower symbolizes the
indomitable struggling spirit of Hai Phong’s people
and its working class.
