New Lincoln Aviator suffers first recall

DETROIT, Dec 3 (Reuters) - In its first month on sale, Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - News) has had to recall its Lincoln Aviator luxury sport utility vehicle to fix a faulty transmission part.

While the action affects only 25 vehicles in the United States, it does add to a record of recalls on newly launched vehicles that Ford has worked hard to erase.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall involved a transmission shift cable that could come loose from its bracket, causing the shifter to show the wrong gear.

Ford spokesman Glenn Ray said on Tuesday the company was aware of only one Aviator with the problem that was delivered to a customer. The rest were still on dealers' lots when the problem was discovered.

Ford has been using a "batch-and-hold" system for its new vehicle launches, where it runs extended tests on new vehicles to ensure there are no problems before sending them to dealers. It switched to the system after the Ford Escape SUV and the Ford Focus suffered recalls shortly after they went on sale.

Ray said unsold Aviators have already been repaired.

Ford executives have said improving quality at the world's second-largest automaker was an essential part of their turnaround plan, aimed at producing $7 billion in annual pre-tax profits by mid-decade.

Lincoln sold 690 Aviators in November. The Aviator is based on the popular Ford Explorer SUV, but uses several different components.

Ford Motor Co. may have to recall 68,897 Lincoln Town Cars because of reports that the side air bags can inflate unexpectedly when the 2001 model luxury sedan hits a pothole or a piece of debris.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating after 76 complaints were received by the agency and the automaker through September.

Nine people were injured in seven accidents reported.

The investigation is the first step toward a possible recall. Ford said it was cooperating fully with the inquiry.

Problem: On certain passenger vehicles, the driver and/or passenger side air bag could deploy as a result of underbody impacts near the sensors, such as those occurring from pieces of gravel or debris thrown from the wheels while the vehicle is being operated at moderate to high speed or being accelerated.

Remedy: Dealers will recalibrate the air bag sensors. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification began March 31, 2003. This action is deemed a safety improvement campaign and is not being conducted under the Safety Act. The company has informed NHTSA that it will provide the modifications described above free of charge. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Saab Has Recalled the 1999-2003 9-5

Saab Cars USA, Inc.

Models: Saab 9-5 Year: 1999-2003

Number Potentially Involved: 70,726

Dates of Manufacture: November 1997 – October 2002

Defect: On certain passenger vehicles, if owners change their wheels/tires between summer and winter using
a steel wheel in the winter and an alloy wheel in the summer, it is possible for rust and contamination to
build up on the wheel hub during the steel wheel usage. If this occurs and the contamination is not
removed, it is possible that after the tire change service, some of this contamination could flake or
grind away resulting in reduced clamping force of the wheel to the hub. Over several seasons, it is
possible that this reduced force could result in fractures developing in the wheel bolts due to wheel to
hub movement. These fractures would result in wheel bolt breakage, allowing the wheel to detach from the
wheel hub, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Owners will be contacted by mail and asked whether they change between steel and alloy wheels. If
they do engage in this practice, they will be instructed to bring their cars to an authorized dealer. The
dealer will remove the wheels, clean any contamination from the wheel and wheel hub, and replace the
wheels using new improved bolts with attached washers
The manufacturer has reported that owner notification is expected to begin during March 2003. Owners may
contact Saab at 1-800-955-9007.

Toyota Has Recalled the 2003 Toyota 4 Runner

Models: Toyota 4 Runner Year: 2003

Number Potentially Involved: 29,482

Dates of Manufacture: October 2002 – March 2003

Defect: On certain sport utility vehicles with V6 engines, the fuel pulsation damper, located on the fuel rail, may have been improperly assembled, causing a diaphragm in the pulsation damper to be damaged. If the diaphragm fails, fuel may leak. This could result in an engine compartment fire if a heat source or an ignition source is present.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the pulsation damper. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification is expected to begin during May 2003. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
