Toyota Motor Corp. has test-manufactured an automobile that has powerful white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for headlights and is set to unveil it at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month, Toyota sources said Saturday.
The vehicle marks the first time for Toyota to use a white LED, a type of semiconductor chip, in headlights. The show will get under way Oct. 22 for journalists and Oct. 25 for the public.
The innovative white LED consumes less electricity than conventional automobile lights, they said.
Toyota plans to test the safety and durability of white LEDs in headlights with an eye to commercializing automobiles equipped with them, they added.
