From The Sydney Motor Show
19 September 2003
On the back of healthy luxury car sales, Bentley will bring a new super-coupe to Sydney.
Bentley says it has taken more than 200 deposits for its new Continental GT from Australian buyers at a selling price of just below $400,000 each.
In comparison, Bentley sold just 21 cars in Australia last year.
Sales of luxury cars are booming in Australia.
Industry statistician VFACTS says that, year-to-date, luxury car sales are up 17.1 percent over 2002, compared with an increase of 9.6 percent for the vehicle market as a whole.
The Continental GT is the first all-new, stand-alone Bentley design for more than 50 years.
Powered by a 6.0 litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine producing 411kW and driving all four wheels, the Bentley can reach a top speed of 318km/h and is claimed to be the fastest four-seat production car in the world.
The interior is a combination of traditional Bentley - wood, leather and chrome - and high tech, including satellite navigation and steering wheel paddle-shifters for the automatic transmission.
The Continental GT heads an impressive list of luxury cars making their debut at the Sydney Motor Show.
BMW will give the innovatively styled new-generation 5 Series its Australian premiere, along with the ultimate version of the popular 3 Series - the track-biased M3 CSL coupe.
The M3 CSL features more power and 140 kg less weight than the already-rapid standard M3. Buyers in possession of a CAMS L3 circuit racing licence will be able to specify their vehicle without a speed limiter.
All 23 of the $210,000 coupes allocated to Australia have been sold, and BMW Australia says it is urgently seeking additional cars from the limited production run.
Also likely to be in demand from buyers when it debuts at the Sydney show will be Saab’s new-generation 9-3 Convertible.
Australia is the fourth-largest market in the world for the Saab convertible. The outgoing 9-3 model accounted for half the luxury four-seater convertible sales here last year.
Saab Australia says it has received an unprecedented number of enquiries about the new convertible, with Saab dealers in all major cities holding orders.
