School Uniforms
For many years, dress code issue has been a headache for students, parents, teachers, and school officials. Young people who are safe and secure, who learn basic American values and the essentials of good citizenship, are better students. In response to growing levels of violence in our schools, many parents, teachers, and school officials have come to see school uniforms as one positive and creative way to reduce discipline problems and increase school safety.
School uniforms help instilling students with discipline and prevent peer pressure. Classmates will be more discipline when they wear professionally outfits to school everyday. School peer have to tug in their shirts and wear appropriate pants to school. In additions, students no longer have to be afraid of what they have to wear to school. Now with the school uniforms enact, the peer pressure over name brand clothes will end. School peer will not be judge differently by their fellow classmates.
In addition, school uniforms can decrease violence and theft. It can also prevent life-threatening situations among students over designer clothing or expensive sneakers. When all students have to wear the same type of clothes, prejudice among classmates will end, or decrease dramatically. Uniforms clothe can help prevent gang members from wearing gang colors and gang logos. School peer cannot identify their fellow classmates as rich or poor, so the theft problems will end in recession.
Finally, school uniforms will help administrators recognize intruders who come to the school. Thousands of students’ lives can be save when the administrator’s notices that the intruders did not wear the specific require uniforms. In addition, it will help eliminate the problems of school peer skip classes to visits another school to see his or her friends. Classmates will also feels safer when they are in class concentrating on schoolwork, without worrying that someone can come into the school. Parents, most importantly will also feels that their child in school is safe, and concentrating on schoolwork harder then ever before. Thus, the local community productivity rate will soon go up.
Students hate to wear school uniforms because school uniforms are not comfortable. The people who are pro-uniform say that wearing uniforms to school reduces cost of having a wardrobe. The exact opposite is in fact true. When a student comes home from school, the first thing that the student does is get out of the uniform. The parents now have to support a child that has two wardrobes. This is an enormous expense, and it is very hard on the children in the school system that is poor. Parents have to buy at least more than 2 wardrobes per child that is so expensively for poorer family. Some may even be forced out of the school system and have to go to another school that they can afford to go to, where there was no school uniforms policy enforced. Trying to make everyone the same could be considered an aspect of communism. Each school peer has their own diversity and individuality of thinking. Students also reported that school uniforms make them feels irritable in classes when learning. For this reason it could reduce the child persuasiveness to learn in classes. The people who support uniforms also say that it creates a safer learning environment by having everybody look the same; it makes it easy to pick out intruders. That is not always necessarily the case. Uniforms are not going to stop some crazed psycho that is going to shoot up the place. If there is an incident where several students come over from another school to beat up a particular student at one school, it would not be that hard for them to pick up some second-hand uniforms and wear them as disguises if they were determined enough. Uniforms are not a sufficient protection in this case. Take your typical, small town school system. These places do not usually have significant problems with drugs, alcohol, or gangs. Having uniforms in such situations is a waste of time, money, and energy. There is really nothing significant to correct, and it is doubtful that uniforms would make much of a difference anyway. School uniforms have some good parts and some bad parts to it, same as other problems. However, to the justification and conclusion from above, school uniforms is still a good policy to enforce. Uniforms build school spirit because they foster this sense of belonging. They enhance school loyalty and pride since the students are recognized wherever they go in the uniform as belonging to that particular school.
With school uniforms policy enact, parents, students, and administrators will not have to worry anymore about school safety or students concentrations in classes. The adoption of school uniforms policy can promote school safety, improve discipline, and enhance the learning environment. Therefore, school uniforms policy should be enact now, in order to prevent prejudice, violence, intruders, and most important of all is death. Individualism does not depend on the way you dress, but upon your spirit, your personality, and your self-discipline. When we adopt uniforms, we send a clear message: School is for learning, not showing off.
