Please help me to choose between Canon A80 or Canon S50. Pros and Cons between the two. I'm a newbie, so please help me out, bros. and sis.

Thanks in advanced.

I don't know but since you like Canon so much, why don't you consider the Canon G4, G5?
The A80 is compact, the S50 is in black and I definitely don't like the lense cover. It's bad, not for now but in long term, after a couple years (possibly months), it will eventually broken, stuck, hard to open.
The G5 (I think) is the biggest, but it is really nice. One option that I see helpful is it has horseshoe for external flash. This is very helpful when taking picture in the dark area. Built-in flash is not enough.

Thanks for your help, Sean. Since you know much about digital cameras, beside Canon, would you consider Sony or other brands?
The reason why I don't like the Canon G5 'cause the way it looks (Big and old style) and its color (black). Please share with me the experiences that you've had which will help me to choose the right camera.

Thanks a lot, bro.!

Hi,

I've used the G2 and had a great experience with the camera.
I expect the G3->G5 would only be better (I like the black color too ;))
Beware!, (as mentioned by Sean) low light photography with those camera is .. very poor. I brought it to my GF's sister's graduation ceremony, back with way less than expected result (even though I tried adjusting the ISO).

So in short, G# are great cameras, just prepare appropriately if you use them in low light conditions.

Oh, 1 more thing, you can visit: http://reviews.cnet.com/Digital_cameras/ by CNET. They have a good review section. If you decide to buy online, they have a price-comparison service as well. Note: don't just buy from the store selling the cheapest, I've had bad service with digitaletailer.com & 1 other store (forgot the name). Cheers.

I'm always prefer to go with digital SLR, it's quite pricey but you have room to grow in the future

Nikon D100 or Canon 10D?

Thanks

Canon 10D

If you're buying, go to a store, take a look & try both of them out. I think you'll get a feel of which one you want. :)

Performance wise, both are extremely good cameras. I've done more than a month worth of research before going with a 10D. Never regret it. You have more selection of lens & Canon Lens are generally less expensive than Nikon. The 10D camera body itself, last time I check, is cheaper than a D100.

Cheers,

You should buy digital camera with rechargable battery otherwise you'll pay more everytimes you use it( at least $10 bucks for 2-3 hrs used)....I have Canon G2 and I am happy with it.

Try this: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs.asp

It is not good idea to buy camera from small website(I did...:( ), try dell, bestbuy....I bought it from dell.com. shipped 3 days.

Selecting digital camera depends on many factors and you have to eliminate things to yourself first. For instance, if you look for a compact cam. and not big one then some thing like Canon G4,G5, Sony S75,S85, Sony F717, F828 are out of your way and don't look back. Just focus on the compact one.
Again, the compact cannot give you enough, and I strongly believe that you won't sastify with cam.
Prof. cam. is always big, not super big, but it's big.
Prof. or someone claim them be a prof. tend to use digital SLR. Believe me or not, if I have money I go for it. But again, this costs money, if you really like it, go for it and I should say you go to bed with it. If not, if you use it like once or twice a week, then it is a waste.
I do own a Sony S85 4M, sharp but I don't think it is good as the Canon G4, which is also 4M, why? maybe 'cuz the Canon G4 that I used has the external flash (and yes, I do use the flash) and the Sony has not. Sony supports only Memory Stick, which costs really high compared to other. That type of Sony has very stupid uncompatible horseshoe for external flash. Just don't want to talk about.
The Sony F828, 8M, is really cool, night shot, ...... but again, it's black and it's darn big. It is two-hand used product :D
Don't have a chance to play with the digital SLRs but surely they are rock

Nikon D100 or Canon 10D?

Thanks

Canon 10D or Canon EOS 300D are nice if you never have SLR camera b4
Nikon D100 is kinda pricey and the funtion is not much better than D70
Nikon D70 is my choice :)

b4 spending that much money, do some research and see which one is best fit for you, I've been using Nikon since I was a kid so I always go with Nikon (not saying that Nikon is always good :) )

I heard that the digital SLS, Rebel from canon and the nikon D70 with reasonable price are make aiming at amatuer photographers like us. Lot of their parts make by plastic instead of metal. Prof photographer like the heavy feeling of the camera but not the nikon D70 ( or Rebel from canon) even though D70 take pretty good QUALITY pictures as D100 and D1X ...etc. In the long run, plastic parts tend to wear faster than those camera make with all metal but .. again, the assumption is that we are just amatuer photographers whose wouldn't take that much of photo anyway :) so it will take a long while before those plastic parts wear off which decrease the accuracy and quality of the pix.

Totally agree :) on this part, but bù cạp tui look at the other angle, since we're just an amateur photographer, saving money is a big part but still wanna enjoy most of the features on the camera that the pros has and who knows what technology is gonna ship in the next few years, Bù cạp tui assume at that time my D70 already wore off and I still have at least couple hundred dollars off from my last purchase and ready for a new camera since D70 is cheaper than D100 or we can use that extra money to buy a couple lenses which gives us more room to play, also không make bà dzợ, gf, bồ nhí, bồ ........... lúa phiền lòng :D :D vì spend too much money on a hobby which quite expensive :D :D

OT: D70 hands-on and long DSLRS rant

From: Frantisek Vlcek

Hi, I had the D70 in my hands for several hours on Monday thanks to friendly Nikon rep. (although their service - different company part - is about as abysmal as Pentax service here - that is, none of the socalled nikon professional service is here, even if you are pro). Sorry for being OT, just few quick notes for those interested in comparison to IstD and BabyD when it comes (if). 1) plastic. But at least it doesn't creak or sqeak when gripped tightly. I can live with that. What I am concerned about is in plastic bodies (including IstD which is part plastic) a heavy pro flash might tear off the pentaprism housing. Especially if the flash has a metal foot (!) like the new nikons. And I don't want a bracket, no thank you! My gear is heavy enough now. I will have to see a cross-section photo of the D70 someday, to see how much the inside is plastic as well. 2) ergonomics are nice. EXCEPT metering mode and drive mode and AFC/AFS mode, these get changed by single buttons, which is HORRIBLE! On D100 you could change all three without looking, just by memory (it was changed by switches, not buttons). What's worse, metering mode is NOT displayed in the viewfinder, so you have to look it up on the status LCD. Phew! AFC/AFS get changed in custom f. menu, but with the possibility of assigning AFL/AEL button as "AF-ON", I wouldn't miss the swtich to change AFC/AFS. AF-ON button and continuous AF are best anyway. 3) Viewfinder is horrible. And that's from Nikon whose viewfinders in Fn series were always very fine. It's only 0.75x with 95% view, and that 0.75x is for the D_APS format of course... And what's worse, it's pentamirror not pentaprism - so it's darker too. I don't understand them. Somebody should hang the product designers! So, the viewfinder is even worse than on D100. Big thanks to Pentax to actually making DSLR with usable viewfinder! On the D100 and D70, there is no manual focus. You just don't see what's in-focus and what's not. Everything looks infocus with a wider lens, so small the finder is. 4)the digital part seems pretty good. Specs are impressive, the image quality at iso 1600 in the few samples looked very nice, the grain was more film-like. 5) crippled. Less crippled than 300D, BUT: and I am sure this will make any existing nikon owners white with rage: the D70 doesn't have under-the-mirror flash TTL multisensor. It measures flash with something supposedly better, 1005 pixel RGB sensor incorporated in the viewfinder lightpath. HOWEVER, all existing flashes for DSLR except the recently announced SB800 and SB600 _need_ the TTL multisensor. So the new D70 will not work with just one generation older flash! Just imagine - getting a digital nikon - you have to change flashes at least twice - this is camera doesn't work with flashes designed for previous digital SLRs! 6) Overall, it's a much better camera than the 300D canon. Still, it's not exactly a pro or semi-pro tool because of the build. I just wouldn't much believe it won't crack. At the price, however, I could buy it to last one or two years only... Damn the digital age! Buying a camera to last two years only... Phew! 7) All this just shows, how the digital age crippled good cameras. Technology moves so fast that there is no time to hone the design into a timeless one like Spotmatic or Nikon F or Leica. To perfect the camera features. Everybody focuses only on the digital "features", which are meaningless. I don't need newest sensors, biggest megapixels, least noise, highest buffer... I need a camera that's easy to use INTUITIVELY. And that means long perfected design, ergonomics that do not change with each new model (ie Pentax, where they redesigned the user interface every time), hard switches which are easy to "read out" even in the darkness by touching (=metering switches on F4/F5/Dx/D100 nikons are perfect), uncomplicated controls, good viewfinder (like *IstD), etc... Most the current semi-pro DSLRs are very good on the "computer" or "digital" side, but with their smalling viewfinder, I can't see the details of what I am photographing... "Is it a smile or a crooked expression on the model's face?!?" What is worse I need a DSLR, and I need it now. And I don't have money for the super best models, 8000$ is quite a lot... Enough. I hope I didn't bore you :) Frantisek

Nice comment on that due to all respect, this exactly what me and my brother were argue about (he's about to buy his D100 instead of D70 and I'm still waitting for my D70 to arrive) and at this point we're all still don't have a chance to put our hand on this unit yet, moreover, all of the Đại gia of Photography out there :D don't have their comment or review about this camera yet until by the end of this month, so hopefully we can touch, feel and see how this thing will bond to our body :D
Hope that Mr Tran2J will get some kinda idea b4 purchase his DSLR and he will get hook with it
