for used car, it's so hard to be exact on the price because it varies so much on each car. For new car, it's much easier because the invoice price is fixed, so you can use that to calculate how much the dealer is really paying.

I'd go the the Kelly Blue Book website: http://www.kbb.com
Put in the TRADE-IN value of the car (you must know as much info about that car as possible), then buy it @ that price IF NOT LOWER.
