For that budget, you can buy any receiver from Sony, Harman Kardon, Pioneer, low-end Denon, low-end Yamaha, .......

1. Denon
2. Yamaha
3. Harman Kardon

But of course it also depends on what speakers you purchase to get good sound out of these receivers.

bTW keep in mind this : If you already have the speakers, check to see what their impedance likes 8,6 or 4 ohms caused some "low-end" receivers won't be able to drive a 6 nor 4 ohms speakers. For 500USD you can get a very good and decent reveicer, I do like Denon but can't afford it, you can get some mid-range Sony or Panasonics too. The best way is listening to the setup at the stores if it has the same or similar speakers as yours. what's kind of setup are you gonna do, 7.1, 6.1, 5.1 ? also keep in mind your tv set inputs like hdmi or dvi or components etc...

Stay away from Sony...

I would go for Denon, Harman Kardon. If you want Sony brand, then shoud go after Sony ES (but the price will be out of your range)

Pioneer VSX-1015TX-K

1015 is too expensive for my blood, but if you can afford it, go for it. It has been said that it's the same as some of pioneer's elite models, but less feature.

Actually Pioneer VSX-1015TX-K is only $500 or you can find it lower in some internet stores. This one has most of surround modes and also THX as well. THX is far better than other surround modes. You hardly find it on other models with this price.
