-- Yes, That is a first step to get clearance. When apply for a job, they require a citizenship, you must have, otherwise application will reject.
For the "clearance" one need get a job first then they will check your back ground (if your brother/sister or parents are still in Vietnam - they will come and check for them!) So it takes alot of times for them to do the Clearance.
You can not get the clearance before you get the job! So it like – can not get experience with out a job. (Please correct me if I am wrong on this)

F(*^*&^*&^, I just wrote a lot of shiet, and they all gone by accident...Fu*(&(
Anyway, just to be quick. It depends on job's description. You should read the job description carefully. If they say they only hire US citizens, don't bother to apply for it because when they look at your application, they will drop it and will not call you in for interview either cuz that will waste both yours and their time.
Clearance is a final step of the hiring process. If you are US citizen and you are hired, they will get copy of your citizenship proofs (passports,...etc) for record. This is usually done on first day. They usually give you 30 days to get this clear while you are working your new job. Afterthat if you cannt prove it, you are fired :) I haven't seen this happend. It only happens if you are really not US citizen, and you lied to them at the first place. This might be bad cuz they might take you to court for lying. They don't check for your bro/sis in VN.

thanks guys. TR needs to understand the relationship between citizenship and clearance. Anyone else could confirm this? Job ads specify requirements to filter out people who don't qualify; and if they don't specify or mention a particular requirement (say, citizenship) then people would assume that it is not required. From my understanding the clearance check is basically a criminal background check (or should it the criminal background check of a citizen?). But, what if on the job descriptions they don't mention anything about citizenship, only clearance code? So by specifying clearance code, is citizenship implied? And then what is meant when clearance is "none"?

1. if they don't specify or mention a particular requirement (say, citizenship) then people would assume that it is not . Yes.
2. So by specifying clearance code, is citizenship implied? Yes.
Clearance is securiry classification by US department of defense. Top secret is highest then secret and confidential is lowest. They may have a lower level for sepecial case. In order to give you clearance, they will ask history of past 15 years or from your 18 birthday. Where did you live, what did you do, school, work, unemployed. Where your relatives live, work. They did ckeck out the information, asking people you use as reference, around the address you listed living or working.
3. And then what is meant when clearance is "none"? means no required.
- Be calm, ready, tell people if you name them in application.
- Write all info once for next time, don't lie.

To work for DOD and contractor you MUST have and may need:
1. US Citizenship
2. Security Clearance... This is depend on your job. This can be from Confidential to TOP Secret. Confidential is take not so long. But for Secret and Top Secret, it's usually take from 6 months to a years. Be very careful when fill this out because they check your back ground back to (I think) 10 years. Even with your closed relatives (Dad, Mom, brothers and sisters, etc) who still lived in VN. This is just a routine that DOD requires but make sure you got all the FACT.
Good luck
P.S. Are you try to get a job as gov't civilian or a contractor?

oh man, sounds like a complicated process. Hmm.. wonder how their officials are going to verify relatives in VN. That doesn't seem possible. Also, ask our neighbors in the past 10 years? Besides the fact that that's a long time to remember, neighbors sometimes don't even know each other's names :D
3. And then what is meant when clearance is "none"? means no required.
Oops TR meant to ask the implication of the "none" on citizenship.

wow, 6 months. The check would cost them quite a lot huh :) I guess those jobs will be stable cuz they won't want to waste all those resources. TR is shopping for a programming or IT job. The ones around seem to be from gov contractors, not the DOD or gov per say. Many such jobs require clearance nowadays. Having to get TS clearance sucks for a programmer.

6 months is unrealistic. It might be true in pre 9-11 era. I applied for DOD clearance in February 1999 and got confidential in May 1999. And more than 4 years later August 2003, DoD granted me a full clearance. Secret Agents (not FBI) do the background check. They interviewed me three time and I had to answer so many annoying, invasive questions. I know several guys who have applied for DoD clearance more than 5 years and they are still waiting. If you have siblings, parents, wife, girlfriend in VN, it will take longer. One guy application got rejected because of his wife is a canadian.
It's a very long process. So, just be patient. FYI, Defense business sucks !

Not really true. They dont check background of your bros/sisi in VN but
they will ask a lot of questions about them. I got drilled in this area for more than 2 hours and I have only one 80 yrs old grandma in VN. They asked something like this:
if someone like Bin Laden kidnaps and threaten to behead your grandma if you dont give him information that relates to national security. What would you do if you were in that situation ?
Clearance is not a final step of the hiring process. The company pays for the cost (around 20-30k). You will lose clearance if inactive for 1 year.

Come on guys, If you know said it, if don't don't "NO^~" like "Dr. NO or TNT General". I have ton of friends who work for DOD, FBI... who have S, TS, TS with SCB. They have sisters, brothers, fathers in VN; they event go back to VN and get marry; they have vacation in VN every year. Above TS I could not tell but normally TS, S and below they check about:
- You use illegal drug? - You're acoholic? - Criminal record? - Bankruptcy? - illegal/ communist/terrorist parties?
They ask you about your closed relatives but not big deal. If you're clear above then you're safe.

hthuong24, that's really weird that it took you 4 yrs to get a secret clearance. That's obviously too long.
AB is getting a secret clearance. The time period for getting a clearance doesn't matter that much because an employee can still get access to classified information with an uncertified clearance. Unless an employee's background is not clear, only then the employee's job will be jeopardized. Don't worry about security clearance requirement of a new job if you know you are clean. However, emphasize that you can get one because your record is clean.

FYI. TS Clearance usuaally take about 1 - 2 yrs to complete.
Within weeks, saw 1 case took only 3 days and another took almost 1/2 a year, of submit your applicatio, you will get temp S Clearance. Then they check your bg for S Clearance or TS Clearance. The time is vary from case to case, but no more than 2 yrs. Then every 5 yrs, you have to renew it. :-p
Temp S Clearance is almost equivalent to S Clearance, can't tell by the badge.

Hey dude, What planet are you living dude? in "Nha Trang", What kind of clearance are you talking about? S, TS or VietCong's clearance? Get lost.
Some people think having clearance is a big deal, sorry, a toillet cleaner and a garbagge collector can and should get clearance if they work in a security place. Security clearance is a process to check the background of workers to reduce the security vulnerable risk. That's it.
Like aznblood and wmszn said: when you apply for TS and below you will get temp clearance. The checking process make take 3 months - 2 years depend on what kind of clearance. A long as you are clear with drug, beer (LOL), finance... you are not worry about security clearance.

As far as I know, you don't need to take polygraph test for TS. TS usually take about 1-2 years. Your company will take care of that part for you. Just apply for the job, once you get in, the company will take care of it. Most of jobs requirement are "able to obtain security clearance". Jobs require TS or S means that you have to have a TS or S to qualify, don't waste your time and their time.
TS and S can be transfer to new job. Need to renew every 5 yrs.
