Your guide to gorgeous eyebrows

Pluck, Pluck Here
Brow experts fall into two camps--waxers vs. pluckers. With the season’s softly rounded arch, tweezers are the right tool for the job, according to Cheryl Renella, owner of Channings Day Spa in Chicago. “Waxing is not a perfect science, and you surrender control to the wax,” she says. After all, she notes, “Eyebrows are your best accessory--they frame your face and give you expression.”

For a natural-looking yet manicured brow, get a professional shaping first. If you have too-thin, overplucked brows, wait four to six weeks for them to grow in before getting a professional arch. Then maintain them using these seven simple rules:

Slide into the driver’s seat. Best place to pluck? The car! “Light in the car is better than any bathroom,” says Renella.

Magnify. A magnifying makeup mirror helps you spy the finest hairs.

Select your weapon. Good-quality slant tweezers do the best job of all. Pluck in the direction hair grows to prevent ingrown hairs.

Ice the brow. “Tissues shrink so the hair is more visible, and there’s more room to pluck from the root,” says Renella.

Avoid no-pluck zones. Be sure to leave the above-the-brow region for a professional to do, or the top line can look jagged.

Finish off. Use a powder brow product one shade lighter than your natural shade. Fix it in place with clear mascara.

Repeat daily. If you let a few days go by, you’ll risk overplucking your arch.

Skin Smoothers

During summer’s hot, humid blast, silky skin makes you feel sexier and cooler. “For people with coarser hair who feel self-conscious, I suggest permanent hair reduction,” says Cindy Barshop, owner of Completely Bare Spas in New York City. “But if body hair doesn’t affect how you feel about yourself or get in the way of you going to the beach, a wax or shave is fine.” Here, how to take it all off for a closer, more supple summer shave:

Soak in the tub or shower for two minutes before shaving to soften hair, making it easier to remove.

Replace razors often to ward off razor burn.

Shave in the opposite direction of hair growth.

Shave the day before going swimming to prevent irritation and stinging.

If you’re prone to ingrown hairs, Barshop suggests using a salicylic acid or glycolic acid acne medicine 24 hours after hair removal to prevent painful red bumps.

Go Glossy

The wet, quenched look makes lips look fuller and younger. If you’ve shied away from a megawatt polish in the past, know that this season’s lip tints and slicks have a more mellow appearance. Here’s the secret behind the shine: These products use shea butter oil instead of waxes for just the right dash of sheer, tinted shine, according to BJ Gillian, Cover Girl makeup pro. “You get the moisture, color and shine of a supermoist lipstick and great conditioning for the lips,” Gillian says.

Eye Ahhh!

A speedy soother for eyes: a clean, cool cloth soaked in cucumber juice or green tea, suggests Suzanne Davison, CEO of Eye Eco, makers of the tranquileyes at-home hydrating system.
