Tokyo R&D Co., Ltd exhibited "RD408H," a hybrid racing car with the maximum output of 590 kW at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show 2005. The car deploys M-TEC Co., Ltd.'s V8 engine "MF408S" integrated with two motors produced by PUES Corp., a subsidiary of Tokyo R&D, that develops electric powertrains. The car also employs a lithium ion secondary battery.

MF408S is the engine used in a car competed in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2005. It boasts the maximum output of 440 kW/9500 rpm and the maximum torque of 520 N•m/7500 rpm. The engine is integrated with two motors, each having the maximum output of 75 kW and the maximum torque of 350 N•m.

The benefit of using a hybrid system in the racing car is that "the lap time can be reduced by a few seconds in the elimination round by using the energy stored in the battery to dynamically assist the engine, while in the final round, the brake energy is recovered to improve fuel consumption by about 4 - 5%," explains the president and CEO Masao Ono.

The vehicle, however, is presently still under development and is expected to actually run after 2006. Although it requires revision of the regulations for the electric racing cars to participate in the races, "we believe that our top priority is to produce the electric racing cars. As races get more exciting by their participation, they will be qualified to gain entry to the races," comments Ono.
