Showa Corp. has exhibited a prototype of an electromagnetic active control suspension at the "39th Tokyo Motor Show." The suspension is publicly presented at this exhibition for the first time, although in-house development has been carried out thus far. When used with a certain control technology, the suspension may eliminate the need for springs.
The electromagnetic suspension on display employs an actuator unit including a rotary motor and ball screw. The unit enables semi-active control to adjust damping force or active control to control rolling or braking dive by using a damper that moves vertically in advance. According to a Showa spokesperson, the company expects that "as the driving population and environment become diverse, just adopting semi-active control able to adjust damping force may be a great added value." In addition to testing the suspension alone, the company has test-driven a "StepWagon" car made by Honda Motor Co., Ltd. equipped with this suspension to collect driving data.
