Salvage means that car had been in an accident (of course a really bad one).
I will not try any salvage title unless have a good mechanic to check it from top to bottom.

In addition to Phalanx's definition, in California, a salvage title also means that the car had been stolen and not recovered within several weeks.

Technically, a salvage car is only worth half of its normal value; however, dealers and other people rarely want to sell their salvaged car at that low of a price.

If you are to buy a salvage car, try to check its history and do what Phalanx suggests.
