92 Probe-Bad Automatic Seat Belt
My 92 probe (4cyl auto) has intermittent problem with the automatic seat belt: normally when the driver door is shut the seat belt will travel along its rail and fastens into your chest, my seat belt once in a while stuck in the rail and didn't move. I have tried to inspect the fuses and found nothing. Any idea what was wrong before I take it to the Ford dealer?
Thanks. |

Auto-seat belt was a really stupid idea.
It does not work like a regular seat belt. That's why they drop it. Back to your problem, it might due to your car is old and the motor is about to go out. What U can try to do at the mean time is to lubricate the rail and motor to see if it still happens. I suggest U not to bring it to the dealer unless U're ready for some rip-off !!! It's not really worth fixing it. I can show U a little trick for it. When ur belt is in closed position (after U seat and close the door, unplug the fuse so it will stay there forever. Every time U get in the car, just plug and unplug the belt from the top.

![]() Well, not true. U still need to pull over the bottom belt to click. Lots of people did not even bother to do it. That's why auto-seatbelt is not safe ... it's a joke !!!

If the seat belt has intermitten problem and the fuse is ok, then very much the seat belt motor is alright. Please check to make sure the the door switch is working properly. That switch easily fails over the time and when water gets into and cause it to corode. Check the door switch on that side of the seat belt by removing a bolt or two. Clean its contact if it is reusalbe. Otherwise, go to a dealer and by a new one. It is DIY work! Good luck and please let me know how it turns out. TD |

auto-seatbelt is using the same mechanism as power window.
But the bad deal about auto-seatbelt is it exposes to dirt more. What I suspect for the intermittent problem (assume motor is still ok) is the rail collects dirt and clogged up in the rail. Try to clean the rail up and put some lubricate to see if it helps ![]()

Tuanduc,
Although it wasn't dirty or corroded, I cleaned the door switch, checked it with an VOM meter and installed it back. Coldwind, I cleaned the rail and lubricated it with grease. Result: I still have that intermittent problem! It doesn't happen everyday. Where is the motor for this seat belt located? Any other suggestions? |

I believe (not 100% sure) the motor is located at the bottom of the driver seat!
